Pioneer announced at virtual CES, that it is bringing its modular radio concept down to the 6.8 inch screen size for those cars that can’t accommodate a larger screen, nor a typical DIN-style radio such as the Chevy Camaro.
The screen separates from the radio chassis with a cable for flexible mounting. With the new DMH-WC5700NEX, the price of such a modular radio comes down to about $600 street price, but shipping is not expected until early to mid summer so exact pricing may change.
Originally the DMH-WC5700NEX was expected to ship this month. However, parts shortages and the fire at the AKM chip factory delayed the launch. “It’s a combination of the AKM situation but also…I think globally, COVID-19 definitely put a compression on parts overall,” said Pioneer VP Marketing Ted Cardenas.
Otherwise, the DMH-WC5700 is similar to the current 9-inch DMH-WC6600NEX in features including both wireless and wired CarPlay and Android Auto Wireless (and wired), Alexa voice control, HD Radio and SiriusXM compatibility.
The new deck also includes Hi-Res Audio playback capability, FLAC file playback, 13-band graphic equalizer, time alignment, 4V RCA preamplifier outputs (front/rear/subwoofer), Bluetooth, rear camera input, and HDMI.
“With the DMH-WC5700NEX, Pioneer provides an automotive upgrade solution for many different vehicles that typically have been extremely restrictive or even impossible with regard to the installation of an aftermarket in-dash receiver, including several popular late model Chevrolet vehicles such as the Silverado and Camaro,” said Cardenas.
With Alexa, users can ask to open the home screen for the radio and change sources, and navigate to certain menus, all by voice. They can also control home automation (“Alexa turn on lights in the living room”) and add items to a shopping list.
Modular interfaces to integrate the DMH-WC5700NEX and other Pioneer radios into specific vehicles are offered by Metra.
