Spotify is launching a dashboard-mount device for cars to a limited number of users, by invitation only.
The touchscreen device called “Car Thing” is voice enabled and has a physical dial. It connects to your phone over Bluetooth to help drivers tune to different Spotify tracks, podcasts, albums or playlists by voice or using the knob.
Spotify said in a press release, “Car Thing enables you to play your favorite audio faster, so you’re already listening to that hit song or the latest podcast episode before you’ve even pulled out of the driveway.”
Spotify also noted that the device “is not meant to compete with in-car infotainment systems.”
Car Thing comes with several different dash mounts.
Users in the trial receive Car Thing for free except for shipping fees. Premium Spotify users can go here to join the wait list.
Reviewers such as The Verge noted that the device may be redundant on a current infotainment system.
