Pioneer Considers New Ultra High End System

Pioneer is evaluating the US launch of a complete ultra high end system with advanced Hi-Res Audio capability.

The system would use new audiophile speakers that were introduced in Japan about a year ago under the Carrozzeria line.  These speakers handle up to 90kHz, well above the 40kHz in most Hi-Res Audio systems.

“It would be a complete system, a full Hi-Res Audio esoteric AV system,” said Pioneer VP Marketing, Car Electronics Ted Cardenas. But he noted that current supply chain issues are a factor in whether the system reaches US shores.

Alpine just began shipping its ultra high end Hi-Res Audio system, the F#1Status, at $35,000.

In Japan, Pioneer’s ultra high end system is offered as the Carrozzeria X.  It is the evolution of the former Pioneer Optical Digital Reference (ODR) system first brought to the market around 1993 and then followed by the Stage IV line in the 2000’s.

The speakers that would be at the heart of a US system use a technology that physically mounts the tweeter within the midrange voice coil. The technology (Coherent Source Transducer) is very hard to manufacture so the speakers are designed and engineered at a Pioneer factory that also makes machine robots and tooling. It is used in professional and high end home audio systems. Pioneer also launched the system a few years ago in a $90K Lexus LC model.
